Axis and Lines: A Unique Residential House Design

An Innovative Approach to Space and Functionality

In this article, we explore the exceptional design of Axis and Lines, a residential house created by Ta-Wei Yu and Mo Chang. This project showcases the seamless integration of art, architecture, and design to create a functional and visually stunning living space.

The owners of Axis and Lines, a landscape designer, were seeking a home that would cater to the needs of their family, including two young boys. The designers, Ta-Wei Yu and Mo Chang, took this into consideration and incorporated natural and industrial materials to meet their expectations.

One of the standout features of Axis and Lines is the clever use of axis and lines to connect spaces and family activities. Despite the narrow layout of the apartment, an axial corridor with dark wood flooring serves as a central link, dividing the service and served areas while maintaining a cohesive flow throughout.

The entrance of Axis and Lines immediately captures attention with its iron frame screen and hanging knotted hemp ropes. Moving into the living room, the ceiling comprises orderly arranged OSB panels, which harmonize with the corrugated steel TV wall, creating a unique visual appeal.

The designers employed a two-tone flooring design, incorporating walnut and oak, to enhance the linear characteristics of the corridor. This not only adds visual interest but also clearly defines the servant and served spaces within the home.

The master room of Axis and Lines showcases a layered approach to materials, combining rough stone, walnut wood, oak wood, iron items, stainless steel, and hemp rope ornaments. The design of the room, including the floor structure lines and the island cabinet against the bedhead, distinguishes the rest and dressing areas. Additionally, the ceiling-hanging knotted ropes echo the concept of axis and lines, further enhancing the overall design.

With a total area of 92 square meters, Axis and Lines demonstrates the successful implementation of the concept of axis and lines to create a functional and visually appealing residential space. The project, located in Taichung, Taiwan, was completed between January 2016 and June 2016.

Axis and Lines has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements.

Axis and Lines is a testament to the power of design to transform living spaces. Through the skillful integration of art, architecture, and design, Ta-Wei Yu and Mo Chang have created a residential house that not only meets the needs of the family but also provides a visually captivating and functional living environment.
